Opinion On Craftsman Tools

At its specific calibrated data point , it had zero error. Stay within the torque wrench’s upper and lower limits. Exceeding the prescribed limits of a torque wrench can damage it, or might affect the wrench’s calibration. Many torque wrenches have clearly indicated upper and lower torque tolerances.
When the set torque is reached, the ball compresses the spring enough to ride up out of the recess and the head slaps against the handle, making a sound. One comment about using a torque wrench – be careful. I’ve seen plenty of people that snap and strip bolts when torquing to the “proper” spec. Click-type wrenches are most accurate in the middle of their range. This should be your guide when choosing one. ALWAYS back it off to zero when done, or it’ll go out of calibration .
I use my Crappy Tire Maximum 1/2” drive torque wrench twice a year. I think I’m good for calibration for a while. I would think old-school is a beam type wrench which is quite a bit more accurate than the best split beam or micrometer click wrench and yet very affordable. One more small item that sometimes traps novice torque wrench users… Beam type wrenches are simple , won’t go out of calibration and as noted above are accurate throughout the range.

  • Including my vintage 1960’s snap-on dual leading beam style.
  • The CRAFTSMAN SAE, 1/2-Inch Drive comes from a really respectable tool manufacturer.
  • The craftsman torque wrench is a piece of crap.
  • Make a rig with a known weight at the end of a measured lever, adjust the wrench so that it clicks when you lift the weight, do the math and compare reality to the reading.

+1 on a torque wrench not being strictly necessary, I used it to tighten the oil drain plug only. I use this $25 Craftsman 3/8 drive torque wrench for bikes, 0-75 ft-lbs. A 1/2 drive torque wrench is too big for bike engines. If you are looking for a torque wrench that has an attractive non-silver color, then look no other than the LEXIVON 1/2-Inch Drive.
